    Default Labor day dove hunt

It's almost time again! My family hosts a big dove hunt every year, complete with plate lunches, drinks and a lot of fun. iirc, it's $100 per gun for one day, or the entire 3 day weekend. It's in West Carrol parish and there are almost always a lot of birds. Who's in?

The are also great in a gumbo or jambalaya.

I have my usual crew that I'll be hunting with up in the Rayville/ Epps/ Delhi area. If anything changes I'll let ya know.

Yep, definitely don't breast them out in the field! they must have at least one wing attached. I have made a gumbo with them too, good stuff!

there are a lot of hotels in the Monroe/West Monroe area, about an hour away. I live in WM, so I am sure we could ride over together. Of course, depending on the weather, I may camp out there on the river bank which is on the same property.

WARNING******DO NOT STOP AT THE SPOTTED DOG ON THE WAY UP*******WARNING

You won't have gas money left to spend for the way home! I caught a glimpse of the outdoor shop on the way up this weekend on 165 and stopped in on the way back. 30 minutes later I had spent twice what I saved by getting my topper from Travis in hunting gear and shooting equipment!

My Granddaddy would have chewed me out for being so wasteful...

Breast them out? You waste the legs and wings!

Hell, I don't even skin them. You pluck them inbetween shots or you get your limit.

With ducks you waste some meat breasting them out, with doves, the amount of meat lost is so minimal, it isn't worth the extra trouble.

OK folks, I finally got the official word on the Annual Dove hunt. I was wrong on the cost, but here's the reply from my cousin via Facebook.

"Tasha Boyd ----Travis, you know you don't pay nuttin cause of that famous last name!! LOL but it's $100 a gun for 3days and anyone under 12yrs is free. Gennie said to tell you to bring as many people as you can. We've got alot more land leased this year. Can't wait!!!"

When is labor day? Whats the limit? Need a few cases of ammo and a spare shotgun right? ha. Kidding about the spare, but never a bad idea. Need an atv to get out there? Never been dove hunting before, sounds like a good time to be had tho.

    Bag Limit

Mourning and white-winged doves and fully dressed Eurasian collared- and ringed turtle-doves: Daily bag limit 15 in aggregate, Possession 30 in aggregate, but note: there is no bag limit on Eurasian collared-doves or ringed turtle-doves provided that a fully feathered wing and head remain attached to the carcass of the bird. Fully dressed Eurasian-collared doves and ringed-turtle doves (those without a fully feathered wing and head naturally attached to the carcass) shall be included in the aggregate bag.

an ATV isn't necessary, but if you have one you will have more areas that are reachable. The main parking area is where there will be food and drink available.

I usually bring at least 5 boxes of ammo. I use 1 1/8 oz# 7 1/2 12 ga. some people like # 8's, more shot per OZ, but lighter, and loses energy faster. I carry several chokes with me, I start out with improved cylinder, and once the shooting starts, the doves will generally fly a little higher, and much faster, so I usually switch to full at that point.

I was really thinking of making this until I realized that Juice and I are going to be riding back from Vegas that weekend.

another bump, I have a family camp on the Ouachita river, about 15 minutes from the hunt, that I could probably have a few people stay if anyone is interested.
